Become A Mentor

What Makes a Good Mentor?

Most of us have had a teacher, supervisor, or coach who has been a mentor to us and made a positive difference in our lives. Those people wore many hats, acting as role models, cheerleaders, advocates, and friends. Mentors assume these different roles during the course of a relationship and share some basic qualities:

  • A sincere desire to be involved with a young person

  • Respect for young people

  • Active listening skills

  • Empathy

  • Ability to see solutions and opportunities

  • Flexibility

Benefits of Mentoring

Mentoring relationships are a shared opportunity for learning and growth. Many mentors say that the rewards they gain are as substantial as those for their mentees, and that mentoring has enabled them to:

  • Have fun

  • Achieve personal growth and learn more about themselves

  • Improve their self-esteem and feel they are making a difference

  • Gain a better understanding of other cultures and develop a greater appreciation for diversity

  • Feel more productive and have a better attitude at work

  • Enhance their relationships with their own children

Above all, a good mentor is willing to take the time to get to know their mentee, to learn new things that are important to the young person, and even to be changed by their relationship.

Why is Mentoring Important?

Every year 1.2 million students drop out of school. What that means is every nine seconds, a student in America loses his or her path to a better future. By empowering students to achieve success in school and life, we are building a world where every person is capable of reaching his or her fullest potential.

Our Story

In 1995, a group of concerned community members saw a need in Moore County for youth to have a positive role model in their life, so they created Moore Buddies Mentoring.

Today, Moore Buddies Mentoring continues to do outreach, recruit, and train volunteers to be positive influences in a young person’s life. Our core programs include In School Mentoring, Community Mentoring, and Structured Day.

In January 2021, we merged with Moore County Literacy Council to form The C.A.R.E. Group, Inc. (Connecting Available Resources for Education). Our combined mission is to equip, empower, and encourage individuals through education, mentoring, and enrichment opportunities.

Starfish Story

One day a boy was walking along the beach when he noticed a man picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the man, he asked, “What are you doing?” The man replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

The boy said, “Don’t you realize there are miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!” After listening politely, the man bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the boy, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”
